You can use whatever color thread you want as long as it is in the list of 15 colors we offer.

Did you already upload your design and get weird results? Make sure any colors you are using match the colors listed above as closely as possible to avoid unpleasant surprises. RGB colors will be automatically converted to our 15 color thread palette. If it looks weird, hand-tune in your graphics editor of choice and upload again.
